Attic Access

Whether local code requires an insulating hood above the attic stairs or not, it is a good idea to install one. Foam board can easily be cut into the right size and glued together to form a rigid and durable structure that will last for years.

Insulated attic stairs

Note that often time the door of the fold-down stairs comes already insulated with a thinner foam board, but that does not contribute much, since it covers only about 50% of the surface. Also, making sure that the door is as air-tight as possible is more important than the presence of foam board. This will reduce the costly loss of warm air mass into the attic space through gaps and holes, avoiding the so-called “stack effect”. Remember, hot air wants to rise. Rubber or foam weather stripping and window seals serve this purpose well.
